The Role of Forensic Medicine in Criminal Justice Delivery in Nigeria
1Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State
Abstract
By offering unbiased, scientifically supported evidence to support criminal case investigation, prosecution, and adjudication, forensic medicine plays a crucial part in Nigeria's criminal justice system. It aids in the assessment of victims and suspects, forensic toxicology, mental state evaluations pertinent to criminal responsibility, documenting and interpretation of injuries, and the identification of the cause and manner of death. Forensic medicine improves accuracy, impartiality, and accountability in the legal system in situations when there are investigative constraints, a lack of institutional capacity, and human rights issues. It is especially crucial when tackling issues like mass fatalities, custodial deaths, sexual and gender-based violence, and violent crime. Inadequate infrastructure, a lack of qualified specialists, a small laboratory capacity, and cultural opposition to coroner autopsy limit the practice of forensic medicine in the area, despite its importance. For Nigeria to effectively provide criminal justice, defend human rights, and uphold the rule of law, forensic medical services must be strengthened through capacity building, legislation reform, and enhanced inter-sectoral collaboration.
